Sermon Discussion Questions:
- Why do you think Jesus chooses to use the word “orphan” in v.18? What role does the Holy Spirit play in not leaving us as orphans? Why is it so important for Christians to know that God has not left us as orphans?
-
How do you think the Holy Spirit empowers us to live Christ honoring lives? See Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”; John 14:17 "even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you."; John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
-
How do you think the Holy Spirit purifies and sanctifies the believer? See 1 Cor 6:11 “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”; 2 Cor 3:18 “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”; and John 17:17 "Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
-
What do you think it means to grieve (Eph 4:30) and quench (1Thess 5:19) the Holy Spirit? When we do this, what do you think happens to our comfort, our power, our help? Does God ever abandon us when we sin? What does God do for us when we are in sin?
-
What do you think it means that the Holy Spirit is the seal of our salvation? See 2 Cor 1:21-22 “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” Jn 6:27 “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” Jn 10:27-30 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

Knowing that we have the power and presence of Christ living within us through the Holy Spirit, how then should we apply this in our lives (e.g. in our boldness, our sacrifice, our holiness, and in our worship)?
