Sermon Discussion Questions:
-
How does man’s ‘ego’ negatively affect our relationships with others as well as with God? Even Christians can sometimes “spiritualize” their ego when they pass judgment on those who think and act differently from them (e.g. eating meat sacrificed to idols; see Rom 14). How do you think well-meaning Christians can protect themselves from their ‘ego’? Where should their focus be and why?
-
In today’s self-centered culture, what is often seen as being most important is what is best for me. What is considered ‘good’, is whatever makes me feel and look good. Do you agree? Why or why not? Will this way of thinking ever work out for anyone? Why or why not?

Contrary to a me-first mentality, the apostle Paul says that Christians are to live and die to the Lord, for we are the Lord’s. Explain why making Christ and His glory the ultimate goal for our lives (as opposed to me and my glory) is the best way for the Christian to live.
-
In our passage, Paul says, “whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” If everything Jesus taught is true, think about how a true believer should face his/her impending death. How does it help us in this life to know that even in death, we are the Lord’s (i.e., how to face the struggles and pain of living in a sinful, fallen world)?

In v.9, Paul says, “For to this end Christ died and lived again”. To what end was he referring? Why should Jesus’ death and resurrection change every aspect of every area of our lives? How does the gospel free us from ‘ego’?
