Sermon Discussion Questions:

1. According to the Pew Research Center, 63% of Americans believe in hell while 73% believe in heaven.  Only 23% identify as evangelical protestants (born again believers). What do you think the non Christian person believes about heaven and hell, and who should go there?

2. Even at an unbeliever’s funeral, you’ll often hear friends and family comfort one another by saying the deceased is in a better place. Why do people automatically believe that their loved one is in heaven? According to v.27, what awaits us after death? Knowing this, how should we respond before the funeral?

3. By what criteria do you think unbelievers judge themselves?  What conclusions do you think they reach about themselves?  When unbelievers “sin”, how do you think they reconcile their actions with their consciences?  How can Christians help unbelieving family and friends understand the bitter consequences of sin?

4. What thoughts come to mind when you think about standing before a holy, righteous, perfect, just God who will know every action, word, thought, motive, and intention of your entire life?

5. The believer in Christ is justified and forever at peace with God because Jesus took the penalty of our sins upon Himself and paid it in full with His own life.  How does this knowledge set Christians free to live the rest of their earthly lives for Christ and for others?

6. Jesus will return a second time, not as a sacrificial Lamb to deal with sin, but as the risen King who will save those who eagerly await Him.  Are you living your life eagerly waiting for Christ’s return or are you eagerly living for your life here on earth? What do you think life looks like when it is lived eagerly waiting for Christ and how is this different from simply knowing you are forgiven?
