Click here for the sermon discussion questions or see them listed below. We highly encourage you to listen, think, and talk about the sermon. These are questions you can reflect on by yourself, with your family, or with your small group.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why is it necessary for a person to understand and accept that he/she is a hopeless helpless sinner in order to understand the Gospel?  How does this help to explain why the Gospel is foolish to most people?
  2. What do you think it means that God is light, and what does it look like when a Christian walks in the light?  On the flip side, why do you think even “Christians” sometimes willingly choose to walk in darkness?
  3. What does this passage teach us about the eternal fate of the person who says they are a Christian, yet continues to walk in darkness?  How should this make every Christian evaluate his/her own life?
  4. According to 1 John 1:9, what is the only hope for the guilty sinner?  What does it mean to confess our sins and how often should the Christian do this?
  5. 1 John 2:1 says, “...we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”  How do you think Jesus advocates for and helps us when we sin?
