Discussion Questions

  1. Zechariah 9:9, speaks of the coming Messiah: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”  Do you think Jesus knew this prophecy?  What was He communicating by riding into Jerusalem on a young donkey?  How does this explain the crowd’s reaction?  What were they expecting?

  2. Does God need our tithes and offerings?  Does He need us to “present our bodies as a living sacrifice”? (Read Romans 12:1) What does God need from you?  Is God’s need for His sake or for ours?  Explain.

  3. This scene where a carpenter turned itinerant preacher is riding into Jerusalem on a young donkey is often called the “triumphal entry”.  Explain why Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem is a celebration of victory, and why His triumphal entry is such a paradox?  (Paradox: “a statement that seems to go against common sense but may still be true”)

  4. As Jesus passed through the crowd, were their shouts of praise to God “for all the mighty works they had seen” true worship?  Why or why not?  Why do you think Jesus did not rebuke the crowds for their praise?

  5. How does God’s creation praise and worship Him?  Why should worship be our natural response to God and what does a life of worship look like?
